ANTH 455 - Skeletal Biology and Forensics

Course Description 
This laboratory course will focus on the evaluation of human skeletal remains in archaeological and forensic contexts. Topics will include determination of basic biological categories, e.g. age, sex, race, palaeopathological conditions, personal identification, and aspects of forensic anthropology.

Course Description

ANTH 455 continues from the topics of ANTH 355, moving beyond the identification of skeletal remains to the analysis and recovery of data from skeletons. Topics include the evaluation of age, sex, stature, and ancestry. The class looks at the range of normal variation and common skeletal anomalies. There is a brief discussion of common bone pathologies. There are also discussions of taphonomy (changes due to environmental conditions) and the analysis of cremated bone. Other topics may include making dental casts or facial reconstructions.
